Richmond

The historic Yorkshire Dales market town of Richmond is undoubtedly one of the most inspiring places in Yorkshire, with a whole host of artists, poets and writers originating here. A place of unique character, Richmond boasts fine Georgian architecture which serves as the setting for the scores of shops, restaurants and pubs for you to sample. With its beautiful location on the River Swale, and its stunning Norman Castle dating back to 1071, it’s no wonder Richmond was voted the ‘UK Town of the Year’ in 2009. Alongside beautiful surroundings, Richmond has plenty of attractions to offer its visitors, such as the Richmondshire Museum. Founded in 1974, it features a lead mining gallery, transport gallery and even the famous set from the TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. The Georgian Theatre Museum and the Green Howards Museum are also worth a visit, as well as the national award winning Millgate House Gardens – an extraordinary paradise overlooking the River Swale. All of this is easily accessible on the A6108, just off Scotch Corner on the A1.
