Peak District
Home > Peak District | Established in April 1951, the Peak District was England’s first national park. With sweeping valleys and rugged peaks, charming villages and impressive towns, the Peak District is always alluring. There are 125 parishes within the district, all with inviting places to stay, relax and unwind. Of course on the other hand the peak district has some of the best walks in the country and demanding cycle paths. You will find streams and waterfalls, purple tufted moorland, forest and woodland and hills and vales. The wildlife is encouraged and guarded and though men have farmed the land for centuries, they have done it hand in hand with nature. | |
| Buxton is England's highest market town and still has a source of delicious and therapeutic spa water. The Thermal baths were built here in the 1850s to provide treatments and relaxation for visitors, you can still sample the water from St Ann's Well today. Buxton boasts a medieval market place, elegant sandstone Georgian Cresent, and the impressive 23 acre Victorian Pavilion Gardens set on the banks of the River Wye where you will find a bandstand and concert hall. Visit the busy market town of Glossop with its many independent shops and museums. Castleton is another interesting market town nestled beneath the gaze of Norman Peveril Castle. Chapel-en-le-frith is known as the historic capital of the High Peak District, it was once part of Henry IV's royal hunting forest and has buildings dating back to the thirteenth century. |
| Padley Manor Gatehouse & Martyr's Shrine dates from 1350-1400. The carefully restored manor house reflects religious persecution in Elizabethan times. A visit here will reveal the history of Catholic life and faith in the Peak District as well as providing a peacefull respite from the modern world. There are masses of B & Bs to choose from, pubs, guest houses, hotels, holiday cottages and camping and caravan sites. Whether it is a self-catered trip you are planning or a luxury re-treat, you can be guaranteed to find something in the Peak District. |
